Merry Monday – A beautiful day for taxes

With French done, I have a lot of other things to catch up on. It seems like I have Mount Everest ahead of me, but I’m just going through the list one at a time. I’ve gotten a couple of things done and some started.

Renovations

Before the weekend, my new kitchen floor was installed. After the credits that Jiffy gave me, install cost less than $40. The old floor was light grey peel and stick tile, which was peeling itself up on the edges. Because I couldn’t get all the glue up from the floor underneath the peel and stick, I needed to put new floor in. Oh, I started peeling it up with a hair dryer. I really don’t recommend that. It doesn’t get hot enough to work well. It was taking around 20 minutes each tile with the hair dryer. With a proper heat gun, a couple hours for the whole floor.

It looks like slate. It’s one piece of Tarkett vinyl. A little soft for moving appliances around on, so be careful if you go with it. I have a little indent from my fridge that I’m annoyed about. You can only see it in the morning from the bathroom, when the light hits a certain way, but it’s there and I know it so it bugs me. This floor was less than $200 including the install and since I had to buy more than I needed due to the manufacturer only having 12 foot rolls, I have enough left for my bathroom someday.

Writing

On Saturday, I finished the Steampunk Romance story I’ve been working on for Eighth Ripple Press. It’s in and I’m waiting to hear what needs editing. I was stuck until I was told the word count didn’t have to be exactly in the range. Then it was like my brain figured out exactly what needed to happen to finish the story. So I’m a few hundred words short, but happy to be on the next stage of the project.

Other than this, I’m taking a little break while I do some things like taxes and visit my family for Easter.

Taxes

Can I just say that I’m so thoroughly pleased with CRA this year? Seriously. Their online option to link with my tax software actually worked and I didn’t have to put most of my income slips in. This was especially helpful since one of my former employers never gave me my T4. I was freaking out because my option was not to put anything or kind of guess. Neither of those felt right to me. I was going to call them, but then it just worked out!

I was proactive at the start of the year and had a beautiful spreadsheet where I had been adding up my car related expenses like fuel receipts. Do you think I could find it? Nope. Had to start over. Otherwise it’s going OK though. Now that my package has arrived, I can go out to my car and get the rest of the paper I need from there to maybe finish them today.

I suppose I should get back at it.

Fortifying Friday – Much to Do

tgif

Image created using Bit Strips.

I have a large list of things to do. Possibly even too much.

On the writing front, I have to finish a short story. I’m a quarter of the way through. It’s fun to write despite it veering away from my original plan. Actually, I don’t think any story I’ve written has stayed on course.

I have a ton of French to do, but I’m really not wanting to bother with it at all.

My school laptop is supposed to arrive today. I have a deposit to put on my seat for school, but am waiting for the transfer to happen from my investment account. Working on the financial plan for school with my adviser. I also have taxes to start. Ugh.

I need to continue cleaning my house. Much progress was made on this as the building superintendent had to visit the other day to help me fix a plumbing problem that didn’t end up getting fixed. All the cleaning I did until midnight left me pretty tired the next day. I still have some dishes and a whole lot of laundry to do. I’m thankful I ran into one of the condo board members the other day as she clued me into a giant bin to take my cardboard to instead of the stinky garbage room where the small bins are usually overflowing. It’s a bit of a walk, but way better otherwise. There’s a bunch of things I want to do instead of the rest. I have novels to write. I really want to get back to The Blood Waitress Club. Scion is also nagging me.

I have video games and musical instruments to play. Skyrim and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood are calling to me. So is Uncharted 2. I had to take a guitar break when I cut my finger, but I also want to get back to playing trumpet and learning keyboard as well as studying music theory more deeply.

I have martial arts to practice. I want to get my skill back in karate, but don’t remember most of the kata 😦

*Sigh* I guess whining about this isn’t getting me anywhere, so I better just go work on the stuff.Have a great weekend 🙂

Merry Monday – Good News!

pen_and_bookOn Saturday, I was informed that I’ve been accepted to college! I’ll be studying Scriptwriting at Algonquin College in the Fall. The program has me more excited than any other I’ve taken. I’ll be learning about the history of film in Canada, how to write for actors/digital media/broadcasting/screen, basic video production, the business side of script writing, and there’s a field placement. I also read about how they often have a field trip where they take students out to pitch scripts to people who make movies happen. I think it might actually be at the Toronto Film Festival. I’m super eager to start the course! Seriously, if I had the books I’d already be reading them and like Hermione know a lot of the answers on day one…

It’s good that I don’t have them yet as I have to prepare financially for this. One of the things to decide is whether or not to get the laptop I really want or to go with something cheaper to save cash. I really want one that coverts to a tablet, but I think I could save like $400 or so going with less. Decisions… I mean eating and my mortgage are pretty important, but gadgetty goodness!

Other good news? I will have an article published soon in Onder Magazine about how composing music and writing stories are similar activities. I’ll let you know when you can get your hands on it, as soon as I know 🙂

I will also be part of another Eighth Ripple Press anthology, which is slated for October. Steamy Cogs is an anthology of Steampunk Romance stories. This is my current WIP. I only have most of it left to write and I have to type it sans my left index finger as I cut the tip of that one. I learned how to type with injured fingers that year I successfully completed NaNoWriMo. It feels weird to do it though. And I keep forgetting it until the pain shoots through my finger. That happened the NaNoWriMo time too. Didn’t learn the lesson the first time…

One sad thing. I accidentally killed a bird when it swooped under my car as I exited a highway ramp on Sunday. Poor birdie didn’t have a chance. RIP little pigeon 😥

I’m off to memorize a book report in French before tonight as our teacher wants us to present this one without notes. Though I hate presentations less than I used to, this one is in another language, which adds a whole new layer of yuck. I think he wants to see how well we improvise. He might have us repeat it too. Extra yuck.

Oh, I have a small book around here on writing scripts. I can read that before school and then give it back to my friend…

French first though.

Thoughtful Thursday – My World for Now

thoughtful

I don’t have one particular thing on my mind for Thoughtful Thursday, so I’ll ramble about life, martial arts, French, and writing today.

WordPress is acting strangely for me today, so I’ll apologize in advance for any possibly strange formatting and such. It has been deleting things after I type them…

Life

My bank accounts have all been sorted out. Unfortunately, I am not currently eligible for overdraft protection due to my currently unemployed state. It doesn’t matter that EI will be paying me nearly as much as what I netted when I was working. It also doesn’t matter that one pays income tax on EI. Ah well, I’ll be able to eat and pay for my mortgage and my other expenses. Self employment would count if I was actually making money off of my writing or any other venture.

I think I’m getting somewhere on cleaning my condo. Some days it’s hard to tell. I find something that needs to be gone through and that makes an area messier before it gets clean. This is rather like a number of things in life.

The outside of my oven is clean. I need to run the self-cleaning setting for the inside, but I have an appointment this afternoon, so it will have to wait until later. I don’t think the people that owned it before ever cleaned it, so it’s pretty gross looking inside.

One of the things I almost have organized is my movie collection. Any non Blue Rays are in CD wallets. They take up so much less room. The problem is that I had bought a movie I already owned. It was $5, but I don’t want to get into the habit of accidentally doing that. I have a list now that has all the movies I own in it. I should probably get a real copy of Rent eventually rather than the PSP version. It’s the only PSP movie I own. Hey, I should charge that thing up and play with it sometime soon. Actually, I can probably trade or sell some games, though I think most probably aren’t worth much.

I’m registered with three recruitment agencies now. Hopefully, I will get a job lead soon, though it could be nice if it happens after the snow is gone. I like to hermit in the winter except for fun things like ice skating.

That reminds me. It’s only about $20 to get a skating pass for the year. I should do that and get my butt out of my house as there are about 8 arenas near me, which is awesome. The canal is fun too, but not near my home at all and parking at Dow’s lake gets expensive.

French

French has begun. We have a new teacher that we know only by first name. He’s very different. He makes us work a lot and often leaves the room while we are completing an exercise.

I was already doing one of the things the teacher wants us to do this semester, which is reading French books to increase vocabulary. He wants us to present on the books we are reading. They can be children’s books. They should be at a level for us where a 10-word sentence would have 2-3 words we don’t know. Any easier, we don’t learn. Any harder, we don’t understand enough.

It sounds like exam is going to be very difficult, so I’m a little scared. At least the courses are inexpensive, so if I had to retake, it wouldn’t kill my wallet, but I rather prefer passing classes.

He often likes to mention things that will damn us if we are taking the government exams. I write those down in case I go that far with French. My main aim has been to talk to my extended family. It would be nice to be eligible for bilingual job positions, though.

Martial Arts

I figured something out about my grip last night while I was practicing my cutting in my condo. Generally, they tell us to have our right index finger at a certain spot on the handle. But my tiny hands kept slipping as I cut. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong for the longest time. Last night, I noticed something on my handle. As many might know, katana often have inserts of things like fairies and such. One on each side of the sword’s handle. Near the bottom of the handle is a knot. This knot is where the left pinky rests above, on top of an opening where the manta ray skin shows, which is grippy. Well, I noticed that on the right side of the handle, near the bottom of where my doves sit, is a similar feeling knot. Instead of making sure my index finger is one finger away from the tsuba (sword guard), I’m going to try to make sure my right pinky is gripping by this knot. Hopefully, my slipping grip will go away and my cutting will improve. I’m sure it will take a bit to correct this for good, but I already feel an improvement in my grip.

Writing

I’m struggling to write this short story. I did some plotting last night. Hopefully that helps me get it written and the anthology accepts it.

Once I finish it, I’ll be back to working on The Blood Waitress Club. I might still need to fix the parts I last read to my writing group. I’ll have to take a good look at it.

So much to do and there never seems to be enough time!

Fortifying Friday – Busy

It was a busy day today for work mocking up web page designs with only the use of Google docs at my disposal and simple tools like paint. Fun. Stuff.

This weekend is a busy one. Tomorrow is the annual dojo Christmas sushi outing, which I always look forward to. Sunday the dojo is doing cutting practice on mats (tameshigiri), but I won’t be able to stay for the whole thing because also on Sunday is a Christmas party with some of the other writers in Ottawa.

I’ve started work on a short story for an upcoming anthology I’m hoping to get it into. It’s a straight sci-fi tale. Straight as in no supernatural elements or sex. I wish I had started sooner, but I didn’t have an idea. Now I do.

Anyway, back to work. One more mockup to go then it’s writing and relaxing time.

Thoughtful Thursday – Tension

All day she waited for the moment that was planned months ago. As the weather grew dark and stormy, she lifted her chin defiantly. Nothing was stopping her today.

She had an important package to retrieve.

But first, there was a workshop on building tension.

As the workshop started, she received a message from a friend, which contained a video. It was from his toddler. She wanted to play it right then, but the authors had begun speaking about tension.

For nearly two hours she listened to their suggestions and comments. They offered tricks and suggested ways to…

But what did the young boy have to say to her?

Right… The workshop. Oh, a book recommendation that sounds interesting. She writes it down.

It is question time and she challenges them to talk about positive ways to create tension that don’t involve dramatic things like bombs. Mostly because she thinks they could all use some positivity.

Naturally, there’s the obvious example involving two consensual adults.

The meeting comes to a close and she plays the video. He would like her to go trick or treating with them on Monday. Her heart melts because he is supremely adorable and of course she will go trick or treating!

And finally. She gets her package of books that have stories she wrote in them. Immediately, she has to sign a copy. Her mind goes blank. What can she say? She figures it out.

Then she lugs the heavy bag of books to her car and sticks the key in the ignition. Something is off about it, but the car starts so she leaves. Snow pelts the windshield. She’s on edge because it’s hard to see between the snow and the gleam of the traffic and car lights on the wet roads.

She reaches home and her car key falls apart. After logging the books into her home, she realizes she forgot to address the signing to the person.

Oops.

Merry Wednesday?

Sorry. I really thought I had posted on Monday.

The seminar went well. It was an informal and intimate group and we learned a lot because there was no need for translation. We also didn’t need to discuss a single movement for 30 minutes. We covered setei (zen ken ren) and went through Omori-Ryu before closing the day with a nice set most of us hadn’t seen called Keshi-Ryu. I have pictures I need to get posting soon, but life has been busy.

Also on Saturday, the Shifting Shards anthology became available, so there is a book with my name on it in the world! You can get your very own copy from any of the links on my Books page: https://raeannegroy.com/the-books/

We went to a pub before dinner. Doubles were on special so I celebrated the completion on the seminar and the publishing of the book. Then dinner brought sake and eventually my dojo friends decided to revamp my dating profile. This may have brought me one man with potential. Time will tell on that.

After dinner, we returned to that pub and I had another double but shouldn’t have. It made the next day rough.

Sunday, I joined the Jodo class an hour late and had a great time. I’m going to start going to it more often as soon as I figure out something health wise.

Monday was spent tweaking some previous work before having it sent to the client for review.

On Tuesday, work changed something with my email, which changed my Google drive access and so I was stumbling around blind for  several hours trying to figure out what I needed to do without the document that has my plan of what to do. It was fun. Then once it was fixed, I started having network issues, so now I’m working in a different folder that had cloud backup with local connection rather than cloud only.

I had a date last night with a different one than the one mentioned above, which ended all to typically with him trying to convince me to let him tuck me in. I could go in depth, but suffice it to say that there probably isn’t a “game” I haven’t seen.

Anyway, I have work to do.

Ciao
