This past weekend I attended Can-Con 2014. Can-Con is an annual speculative fiction conference held in Ottawa, Ontario. While the focus is on Sci-Fi, Horror, and Fantasy genres, there were also panels on Romance and Mystery. Many panels were about the craft of writing and could be applicable to any genre. Other panels focused on the science behind the fiction to support the stories one may write from a factual standpoint (space exploration, current work in Canadian labs, blood spatter). There were also panels on geek culture (writing role-playing games, Guardians of the Galaxy, superhero tropes, etc), a TV show debut (Kagagi), and a brilliant paper airplane contest, which yours truly managed to win despite a visceral reaction to a request to sing a solo piece. What did I win? A book on paper airplane construction to prepare for defending my championship next year.
